FIA WEC BoP Process Explained (2024)

ACO competition director Thierry Bouvet explain (Sportscar365)

Hypercar

The Approach

  • Primary purpose is to keep the cars within a certain margin of the average speed of the fastest example of each car on the grid
  • The performance window undisclosed
  • Does not guarantee total performance parity
  • BoP changes will be made more slowly for cars that are slower than average
  • Ensure fastest LMH car and the fastest LMDh have similar performance
  • Different BoP for 24 Hours of Le Mans

The Data

  • Data from last year,
  • simulation data, and
  • data derived from each race
  • will be evaluated after every event
  • Average fuel load per stint ia a new parameter
  • Different circuit characteristics considered

This starts with Qatar 2024.

The Terminology

Homologation Parameters
(was “Starting BoP”)
Values given to a new model without any real-world race data
Equivalence of Platforms
(was “Platform BoP”)
Adjustment between LMH and LMDh
Manufacturer CompensationAdjustment for car within platform

We define the performance window. Hopefully there will be cars inside. There could be cars that are slower or cars that could eventually be faster.” -Thierry Bouvet 1
